I did a bit of animation wohoo!

brief storyboard

  • I had a friend who does animation to collaborate with this project. They worked out the timeline and storyboard, which is very helpful.
  • The visual outcome has yet to be decided and will be worked along the way. Though working around the genre of the music gave more direction to how the animation will look. This would be the open-ended project, where we could be more experimental with the animations.

What should I make?

I wanted to incorporate people and the society for this book cover since Norwegian Wood talks a lot about relationships and human connection on top of the themes of romance, politics and life.

The challenge for this particular project is to be able to communicate his tone of voice and but also appeal to the audience. After all this is would become commercial.

I have never done rotoscoping...

Thom Yorke - Suspirium

These are very sophisticated and well-crafted animations. Rachel Gutgarts' animation stood out amongst other rotoscope animations since they used screen print as the main medium. It is a clever way of creating through traditional media, which also suits the concept of their project. For this collaborative project, I have yet to sort out the main concept, story/narrative as well as aesthetic. As I think it plays a significant role in determining the tone and atmosphere of the animation.

Timetable

A time table for the year. I tried to plan it out as realistically as possible, though I spread it out between projects, there are still a few overlapping ones.

Extended Practice: Statement of Intent

For this module, I plan to develop my practice on working with commercial briefs and projects. I intend to work towards set briefs; creating illustrations with a communicative purpose through design and advertising. Though, alongside these briefs and client-based projects, I also aim to create some self-initiated work to build and strengthen my portfolio. I decided to approach my practice through digital media and develop my image-making skills even further. I plan on continuing to explore moving-images and gifs, which is something I am generally comfortable with and enjoy using. I am also considering animation or video making, perhaps through collaborative projects with other disciplines. This is something I am genuinely interested in, being able to work with other people and creative individuals. I personally think that I work best with solving problems and briefs as well as working towards the clients' needs. Since I intend on focusing on working with live briefs or client-based work, most of my investigation and contextual references would include company research, client background and the target audience, consumers. I am not too confident with writing my own briefs, though I would be more productive if someone would direct me. Though I would also set aside some smaller self-initiated projects, simply for creating art for the sake of it. This would provide some space where the work created are derived from personal interest and enjoyment. It would also showcase my identity as a creative practitioner. In terms of documentation, I would use sketchbooks for my roughs and designs as well as the blog to reflect and evaluate throughout the process. I will dedicate the first week to research and work with one project at a time. I allocated longer time for larger projects such as the D&AD briefs, since it would involve more research than the other projects. Also the more time given towards this project would allow room for crafting. Whereas the self-initiated projects and some smaller client briefs may not require as much production time. However, I expect some projects to overlap if it would deem effective towards the production of the projects.

STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Individual Practice & Final Illustrations

  • I would say that I am proud and satisfied with the outcome of this project due to various reasons. One of the main reasons is being able to create something I am genuinely interested in. I have found that I enjoy working traditionally more effectively since I have yet to master digital media. From the previous module, I found that I quite enjoy creating animated illustrations, despite it being simple movements as it seems more inviting and suits the current modern trend (gifs, online platforms, social media etc)
  • Currently, I could say that I am interested in branding, retail and those alike. But this is still indefinite. I am at a point where I really should start being more selective rather than wanting to do everything. I should focus more on developing my skills in image-making and simply create things I enjoy doing.
  • Thoughts to carry-on for future projects: I would like to work on more content and crafting my illustrations/image-making. Less on wanting to make things for the purpose of aesthetics? I feel that I tend to dwell and overthink my own work which often cause the constant changes with my ideas or generally being stuck on a problem. I simply need to be more decisive and confident with my own work with the right amount of planning and ongoing evaluation.

STUDIO BRIEF 2 - ICAF

Main Poster for their event (as well as the design of the
event book)

PPI LEEDS instagram page - https://www.instagram.com/ppileeds/?hl=en

  • They've decided to go for a mixture of the plants theme and asked me to use the lino design I made of the Barong as it suits the 'culture' aspect of the event. They had said that it would be more appealing to the general public and reflects more of the main idea of the event (promote Indonesian Culture)
  • I honestly wasn't too happy with the designs since there were several restrictions, but they seemed to like it and decided to go for it. But for this brief particularly, I decided to push my designs further.
