SCREEN PRINTING! - the overall design

Trying out with two layers
Too detailed?

Layer 1

Layer 2

Thoughts
  • I was a bit hesitant about the final design for my fan art poster. I feel that it might be too detailed that it might not appear on the print itself
  • I tried designing it on photoshop and use the bitmap method. Since I wanted to different shades to create depth. My only concern is whether it would show in the actual print

I SEE FACES - Why can't I seem to get things right?!

  • I tried out manually drawing out the character. Though it didn't work out as well as I thought it would. The movement is a bit choppy. That and if I were to use this approach, I may need to use thicker paper perhaps.

Shapes! Shapes!
That overlaying effect!

  • I may have given up on the previous approach (I might get back to it later after I come up with a better plan). I wanted to try out different approaches in creating movement with Photoshop.
  • There are some things that I thought was interesting that may be difficult when made with analog media. The overlaying and colouring is one thing that I really liked. It's nothing special, but it somehow adds dynamic to the movement (?)

Too fast. Need to work on the timing.

Quite like the change in expressions. Still chunky.

  • Now I have a better idea on what I would like to focus on in terms of the digitally-made gif. I would still use the 'rock' characters, but perhaps I would now focus and develop on the composition and action of the characters.

I SEE FACES - GIFS!

I am actually really enjoying this exploration and experimentation with gifs...

(First attempt)
?
Added more elements and movement.

Thoughts

  • Making gifs isn't as simple as I thought it would be. I suppose I am getting a hang of making them in Photoshop. Though I think that I would like to explore creating more movements (?)
  • At this point, I am still not fixed with how my gifs would look like. I suppose I am quite stuck with the composition of the gif and which parts I would animate etc. (lots to consider!)
  • Though I briefly mentioned my gif to a peer and they told me to check out a short animation. It's a very simple (maybe lack of content) but I found the looping, the colours and character really funny and interesting (the music helps the mood too!)
  • It's the slight changes in colour and composition throughout the repetition that catches my attention.

SCREEN PRINTING! - Fan art and planning (?)

I often create fan arts/sketches during my spare time, but somehow when we were given this brief, my mind seemed to be blank.

More Japanese culture + food
Japanese culture (?)

Thoughts

  • I may have thought too much about the brief particularly the requirements such as using composition and elements that we have been discussing in this module
  • I thought of flipping this brief around (which I sometimes like to do), though it was quite tricky to do so for this brief.
  • I made a few roughs, though somehow the composition doesn't feel right? It would either be rather flat/dull or just awkward to look at. I was trying to go for a simple and minimalistic approach, focusing on light and shadow (Japanese aesthetics!) Though I still can't figure out how to convey that especially when we are limited to two colours and layers for screen printing
  • Another thing I am worried is that, it is a screen print so I needed to consider the shape and perhaps use less detail and more block colours (?)

I SEE FACES  - Love these GIFs!

  • we had a briefing and a little workshop on how to make gifs on photoshop. It didn't seem as difficult as I thought it would be.
  • I am quite nervous and excited since I actually never made gifs before. I suppose my concern lies more towards deciding on the character and what I would add movement to, so it seems 'alive' in some sense.

MADEBYRADIO

Ralph Lauren 2016 Olympics

  • I really enjoyed looking through his gifs and the common use of simplicity in colour and character. It is also very minimal, though I feel that the vibrant, bold, solid colours make up for the lack of content/narrative/decorative aspect.
  • It is also the looping action that makes it hard for me to stop staring. For instance the swimmer, the flow of the water droplets complements the character. If the water effect weren't there perhaps, it would have been quite dry.
  • Also I really like the timing of the swimming gif. I like the slight suspended movement right above the water and the swift action as it goes back to the diving board. Amazing!

Khuong Le-Leonard

Game in 20s

  • While I was browsing around for gifs, I instantly thought, this is it! (best gif I found...so far). Perhaps it is the subtlety, the whole composition and narrative in this animated illustration.
  • The movement isn't particularly as complicated as the previous gif, though it is the slightest movements of the feet tapping, the paper, the moving Pacman and the fan. It is those attention to detail that attracts me to this gif.
  • I suppose if there were more movement it would ruin the atmosphere (?). From the colour and subject matter, this gives off a lazy, hot summer day indoors playing video games (best describes my summer holidays)

KIM SALT

Winter animated gifs

  • similar to the previous gif, I really enjoy the subtle, repetitive movement. Though it is the paintily and illustrative element that caught my attention. I really like this approach as I could still see the painted texture (not solid, block colours). But it is also the stillness of the image, but there is a sense of 'life' or 'motion'. For instance the horse's breath and snowfall.

Thoughts

  • Consider the surroundings of the subject (not just plain white background and a single character). Or perhaps keep it simple?
  • think about the movement. Whether it be subtle/slight or rather energetic.
  • but first think of the intent (still trying to figure this out). What emotion and atmosphere am I trying to communicate?
  • Plan! Plan! Plan!

VISUAL LANGUAGE SESSIONS - Cooped up thoughts, composition and those wordy handouts

  • I honestly feel that some things written in the handouts are quite odd. For instance in one of the composition handouts saying what is a 'good' composition is quite subjective. I find it strange how they seem to imply that there is only 1 specific way to make an 'excellent' composition. Perhaps this is also because of the period in art. It is different from today where compositions could be so aligned, symmetrical as Wes Anderson's films or as crowded, simple or asymmetrical
  • Though I thought that the handout discussing about depth and lines is quite informative. There is more sense to it and there are examples that could inform my practice.

Depth and Leading Lines

What a lovely weather...

the view from the library

my attempt in creating depth with well-planned,
thought through composition (not really)

  • I personally thought that this short brief is quite challenging in terms of defying my comfort zone. It was more towards the uncomfortable feeling rather than anything else.
  • I suppose it was tricky on my end as I had to think about the foreground, middleground and background. I feel that I quite like working with flat, one layered images. Though this was an interesting, new experience. I may want to incorporate this later in my practice actually.
  • I properly thought through the composition, though I never really thought of the impact of it. For instance, exaggerating the foreground or placing a layer of tracing paper for the faded effect. Would it be different? If I hadn't enlarged the books or coloured it full black?

I SEE FACES  - Strange song and even stranger characters

  • I wanted to look at earthy and world-like elements. After listening to the song a few times, the atmosphere and mood I have been getting are relatively positive, spiritually enlightening (?), contemporary, jazzy, hippie and so on.

  • Somehow it made me think of aboriginal, aztec, lots of patterns and colours. I am still unsure on where this is going in terms of the character, though I want to focus on the elements and tone.
  • This is still my initial idea, though I would like to go for a more earthy colour scheme and theme

Arts of Southeast Asia - Fiona Kerlogue

Strange Maluku statue (I actually have a
similar one in my backyard)
Indonesian Batik -
traditional patterns on fabric
Typical Balinese painting. Tropical trees,
huts and long-limbed humans

  • I was also looking at my own culture since the song reminded me of my native culture. The song feels somewhat tropical? Very bright. Though looking at that strange statue, the simplicity and structure of the face reminds me of the faces I usually create whenever I draw human faces.

Rough Designs

Now that I look over it again, this is a very
strange figure
Fashionable Buddha?

Rocks!

  • I quite like the simple designs and expressions. Though I think that I need to consider the action and movement as well as the intent of the GIF. I have been too focused on how the character would look like.
